La Rambla in Barcelona
La Rambla: it is a wide pedestrian street running southeast towards the ancient port from the centre of Placa de Catalunya, flanked by two narrow streets for traffic; the Arab name “al-raml” (current) was given by the Moors in the 8th century to the rivulet of water which reached the Mediterranean, outside the city walls westwards.
It is divided into five sections, the reason for which it is also called “Las Ramblas”; it is the city living room, with kiosks selling newspapers and flowers, where street artist perform along with mime artists, jugglers and puppeteers.
At the end of the Ramblas, towards the sea, there the monument for Columbus, depicting the seaman with a statue 51.30 m tall pointing its finger towards the New World.
